As we begin this new year, I encourage you to look at it with fresh eyes. I'm reminded of the verses in Lamentations 3:22-23 (NASB), which say: "The Lord's lovingkindnesses indeed never cease, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness." When I survey the curriculum I've chosen, examine each child and their individual needs and characters, and remember the last year, with all of it's ups and downs, I find it easy to focus on what has been. While it is an important part of reflecting and gaining understanding, I often need to remind myself to do like God, and give my child a fresh start. A blank slate. What child wants to sit down with fresh books and pencils, and all the while think that your parent/teacher is looking at you, saying in his or her heart, "I remember last year. She never did finish that project. He couldn't keep up. They always struggled in handwriting...math...[fill in the blank]...They won't do any better today"? Not one, of course!
Neither would any of us. Aren't you thankful, knowing that God gives us a fresh new start every single day? This is possible because that through the blood of Jesus Christ, He has offered us forgiveness of all of our sins- past, present and even future. When you have accepted His forgiveness, every day is another joyful chance to live in light of that, to be free to live your best for Him without being dragged down by what you did, or who you were before.
In that same way, let's begin a school year of wonder: a gift for our children. "Forgetting" the tears and frustrations of last year or of yesterday, let's allowin them to do their best to shine for you, their beloved parent and teacher, on this new day. And while they shine, we can remember that He has given us parents a new start, so the mistakes and discouragements we had as parents last year or yesterday don't have any power over us anymore. We can shine for Him, as well!
